Mel Efros was the Unit Production Manager for Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home and Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. He also served as Co-Producer for the latter film. The alien species known as the Efrosians, who made their first appearance in Star Trek IV, were named for Efros. In March of 2005 Efros assisted Memory Alpha in clarifying the name.

Efros had previously served as production manager on several made-for-television movies, including 1983's Kentucky Woman (featuring Peter Weller) and 1984's My Mother's Secret Life (with Paul Sorvino). He first entered Hollywood in the 1970s as an assistant director of such films as Oklahoma Crude (1973, featuring William Lucking, Harvey Jason, and Robert Herron) and Empire of the Ants (1977, starring Joan Collins, Robert Lansing, and Robert Pine). He also worked with director Joseph Sargent on the 1973 film White Lightning.

He later became a supervising producer on MacGyver and as a producer of the series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman (starring Teri Hatcher) and Gilmore Girls. He also produced the TV movies The Seduction of Gina (1984) with Ed Lauter, Roman Holiday (1987) with Ed Begley, Jr., and Running Delilah (1994), starring Kim Cattrall.
