After Spock's brain was separated from his body in 2268, his disembodied voice commented to Dr. Leonard McCoy that his medulla oblongata was "hard at work apparently breathing, apparently pumping blood, apparently maintaining a normal physiologic temperature." (TOS: "Spock's Brain")
