Chakotay's medicine bundle

Chakotay's medicine bundle laid open

A medicine bundle was a bag or blanket filled with a few, very personal items, used as a ritual aid during a vision quest by Native Americans. A medicine bundle had to be comprised of items that define a person and ground them, thus ultimately allowing them to take the journey into the self.

Chakotay's medicine bundle[]

Chakotay's medicine bundle contained a blackbird's wing, a CHAH-mooz-ee river stone, and an akoonah, wrapped in animal skin. (VOY: "The Cloud", "Initiations", "Tattoo", "The Fight")

In 2371, he used it to help Captain Kathryn Janeway find and contact her animal guide, telling her, however, that eventually she had to make one for herself one day. (VOY: "The Cloud")

In 2372, Chakotay used his medicine bundle while performing the pakra, a ritual to honor the anniversary of his father's death. His medicine bundle was lost during an encounter with the Kazon-Ogla, and he was required to replicate a replacement in order to finish the ritual. (VOY: "Initiations")

Neelix's medicine bundle[]

After a near-death experience in 2374 that left him deeply disturbed and uncertain, Neelix assembled his own medicine bundle after seeking Chakotay's help in performing a vision quest. Neelix's bundle consisted of a necklace that belonged to his sister Alixia, a flower from Kes' garden, and a model of the Guiding Tree. (VOY: "Mortal Coil")
