Buckland has started his career as an actor with appearances in L.A. Law (1987, with Corbin Bernsen, Larry Drake, Eric Menyuk, Clayton Rohner, and Constance Towers) and Tour of Duty (1989, with Dan Gauthier and Page Leong), before he then turned into directing and producing.
Among his directing credits are television series such as Murder One (1997, starring Daniel Benzali, Barbara Bosson, John Fleck, Jack Kehler, Clayton Rohner, Rick Worthy, Victor Bevine, Don McManus, Karen Austin, Jack Blessing, and Richard McGonagle), Felicity (1998, guest starring Lorna Raver and Ron Canada and created and produced by J.J. Abrams), NYPD Blue (1999), The West Wing (1999), Scrubs (2001-2003, starring Ken Jenkins), Ed (2000-2004, starring Jana Marie Hupp), and My Name is Earl (2005-2007).
In 2002 he was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding directing for a comedy series for an episode of Scrubs, in 2006 he won an Emmy Award for directing an episode of My Name is Earl. For the latter episode he also won an DGA Award. This year he has been nominated for an PGA Golden Laurel Award as a television producer for My Name is Earl.
