Make believe was a term used to describe something imaginary during the 20th century, especially when referring to the settings in the works of science fiction and fantasy.

In 1953, when Benny Russell was talking to a news vendor about science fiction, the news vendor told him he preferred war stories, because sci-fi was "all make believe." (DS9: "Far Beyond the Stars")

In 2365, when Commander William T. Riker was wondering how the Charybdis and her crew could have possibly reached Theta VIII at sublight speeds. Captain Jean-Luc Picard suggested that whatever alien life form created the make-believe world that was based on the Hotel Royale novel might have brought the ship there. (TNG: "The Royale")
