"Magic Carpet Ride" was a song written by Earth musicians John Kay and Rushton Moreve and performed by the rock and roll group Steppenwolf in 1968.

Zefram Cochrane, a fan of rock and roll music, played "Magic Carpet Ride" during the launch of Earth's first warp ship, the Phoenix, in 2063. Copilots William T. Riker and Geordi La Forge, and Deanna Troi in mission control, were rather bemused by Cochrane's taste in music, of which Troi received an unexpectedly loud introduction as she was wearing a headset.
