The MIDAS array, or Mutara Inter-Dimensional Deep Space Transponder Array, was a communications array developed jointly between Starfleet and the Vulcans. It utilized hyper-subspace technology to greatly speed up transmission time. It was launched around 2376. In that year, Deep Space 9 predicted that a pulsar would pass close to the array. The array was later used to make contact with USS Voyager in that year. (VOY: "Pathfinder")
- The expanded name of the array doesn't translate easily to the acronym 'MIDAS'. The full name is shown on a display and mentioned only once in the episode, spoken at very high speed by Barclay. It may have some connection to the Mutara sector, although this is not mentioned. The model for the MIDAS array was later reused as the Yosemite 3 research post in "Zero Hour".
