A radiograph of the Human body showing the liver

The liver was an organ that was vital to metabolism. It filtered toxins out of the blood and produced bile, which played an important role in the digestive system.

Anatomical References

A diagram of the Human torso depicting the location of the liver was stored in the USS Enterprise's library computer database. This database was accessed by the Talosians in 2254. (TOS: "The Cage")

The Vulcan heart was located where a Human's liver would be. (TOS: "Mudd's Women", "A Private Little War")

In the mid-2260s, strain on the liver was one of the side-effects of an experimental chemical stimulant designed to speed up reproduction and replacement of blood. (TOS: "Journey to Babel")

In 2268, Leonard McCoy suffered 70% liver damage after being tortured by the Vians. (TOS: "The Empath")

In 2269, McCoy told Janice Lester, who had taken over James Kirk's body, that his liver was "functioning at [its] usual, normal peak of efficiency." (TOS: "Turnabout Intruder")

Before reviving L.Q. Clemonds in 2364, Dr. Beverly Crusher scanned him and found that when he died, he had an advanced case of emphysema, along with extensive liver damage. (TNG: "The Neutral Zone")

In 2365, Katherine Pulaski determined that the livers, among other organs, of the USS Lantree crew showed signs that they had died of old age. (TOS: "Unnatural Selection")

In 2369, Captain Jean-Luc Picard had internal hemorrhaging, as well as liver and spleen damage following an attack by Lenarians. (TNG: "Tapestry")

In 2372, Kes told The Doctor that the mutated DNA in Tom Paris' liver cells was deteriorating as the result of antiproton radiation, but that his original coding was not taking over. (VOY: "Threshold")

By 2375, livers were able to be created synthetically, although they were in short supply during the Dominion War. (DS9: "When It Rains...")

Among the many organs found in a secret laboratory on a Vidiian planetoid was the liver of a Kazon. (VOY: "Phage")

After being exposed to a temporal energy surge in 2377, Chakotay had the liver of an eighty-year old man and the kidneys of a twelve-year old boy according to The Doctor. (VOY: "Shattered")

Liver as food

Liver was a delicacy among many species. Phlox was fond of chicken liver with grated cheese and slug liver was enjoyed by Ferengi and was served in Quark's. The Klingons eat the liver of bok-rats. (ENT: "Storm Front", DS9: "The Assignment", "Soldiers of the Empire")
