Literature was a body of written work that was considered as an expression of art or intellect, which often appeared in the form of poems, short stories, novels, novellas, dramas, melodramas or repetitive epics.

Tolaris taught literature at the Shirkar Academy prior to leaving Vulcan. (ENT: "Fusion")

Henry Janeway believed that the classical age produced the "greatest literature mankind ever produced." (VOY: "11:59")

Upon the discovery of the USS Defiant in the mirror universe, Phlox researched "classical literature" of the prime universe's past to their own. He compared the major works with their counterparts in both universes, even skimming a few of the "more celebrated narratives," and found the stories were "similar in some respects," but their characters were "weak and compassionate." He also found the "exception of Shakespeare," where he found that "his plays were equally grim in both universes." (ENT: "In a Mirror, Darkly, Part II")

Late 20th century Earth literature was noted as being full of colorful metaphors, as found in the works of Jacqueline Susann and the novels of Harold Robbins. (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home)

According to Geordi LaForge, Aquiel Uhnari "had questionable taste in literature." (TNG: "Aquiel")
