Leif Ericson was a late 10th century Viking explorer on Earth.
Enterprise historian Marla McGivers adored Ericson and made a painting of him. When Khan visited her quarters in 2267, he recognized Ericson, and said McGivers' paintings were of "bold men from the past."
Later McGivers surprised Khan by saying that she knew his identity: the genetically-engineered superman was "Leif Eriksson and Richard the Lionheart and Napoleon." (TOS: "Space Seed")
Ericson was the leader of the short-lived "Vinland" settlement and is thus considered the first European to discover North America proper (excluding Greenland).
"Ericson" is the English form of the surname. Norwegians, Icelanders, Danes, and Greenlanders – the descendants of the Vikings – spell it "Eriksson"; this latter form is the one used in the TOS Season 1 DVD subtitles.
