The Los Angeles Police Department (or LAPD) was a law enforcement agency in Los Angeles, California in the United States of America during the late 20th century.

Captain Braxton often had run-ins with the LAPD in 1996 for posting signs around the beachfront, stating that it's the "Future's end." A few people complained about his actions to the police. During one such run-in, as one of the officers, Sims, approached Braxton, Braxton warned him to stay away and referred to him as "quasi-Cardassian totalitarian." (VOY: "Future's End")

Gene Roddenberry joined this police department after World War II. Spock was inspired by Captain (later Chief) William Parker, whom Neal McDonough portrayed in the TNT show Mob City alongside Simon Pegg, and for whom James Cromwell's character in LA Confidential worked for. Klingons were named for Lieutenant Wilbur Clingan.
