Kurland was a Human male aboard the USS Enterprise-D in 2364.

He had one son, Jake Kurland. When Jake tried to leave the Enterprise-D with a shuttlecraft that year, he asked Captain Picard to tell his father he was sorry but he could not stay aboard the ship. Picard told him he should bring back the shuttle and tell this his father himself. (TNG: "Coming of Age")

It is unknown if Mr. Kurland was a Starfleet officer or a civilian aboard the ship. On the matter, the authors of the Star Trek Encyclopedia (3rd ed., p. 255) stated that he was a Starfleet officer.
