Kerla

Brigadier Kerla (2293)

Brigadier Kerla was the Klingon military advisor to Chancellor Gorkon in the 2290s.

In 2293, following the destruction of the Klingon moon, Praxis, Kerla responded to the communiqué sent by the USS Excelsior, rejecting Captain Sulu's offer of assistance. Kerla stated that what occurred on Praxis was merely an "incident" and that everything was under control and ordering the Federation not to enter the Neutral Zone.

Six months later, Kerla was among Gorkon's contingent that transported aboard the IKS Kronos One to Earth. Kerla later transported aboard the USS Enterprise-A for dinner with the senior staff. During dinner, Kerla stated that if the Gorkon peace initiative succeeded, it would mark the annihilation of Klingon culture.

Following the assassination of Chancellor Gorkon, Kerla continued to serve as military adviser to Azetbur, the former chancellor's daughter, during her attempt to continue the peace initiative with the Federation. As Azetbur's adviser, Kerla recommended that the Klingons attack the Federation while they were still a capable force, reckoning that it was "better to die on our feet than live on our knees".

Kerla, nonetheless, abided by Azetbur's decisions, joining her at Camp Khitomer, and assisted in protecting the chancellor during the assassination attempt on the Federation President. (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country)

Kerla was played by actor Paul Rossilli.
His quote that it would be "better to die on our feet than live on our knees" is a quote originally said by Emiliano Zapata
