Kar was a Kazon-Ogla youth who was trying to earn his warrior name. He encountered Chakotay in 2372, when Chakotay's ship drifted into Kazon space. Chakotay is fired upon by Kar, who hopes that by killing the trespasser he will earn warrior status. Chakotay destroyed Kar's ship, but beamed him aboard before it exploded.

When Chakotay returned Kar to his people, he along with Kar was imprisoned. Kar was disgraced and sentenced to death by the Kazon leader Razik. Razik told Chakotay he could go free, if he killed Kar. Chakotay overpowered Razik and escaped with Kar. Kar and Chakotay would land on a Kazon moon used as a training camp. Razik and the Kazon found them, but Kar killed Razik, proclaiming that Razik was his enemy not Chakotay. The second in command, now the new First Maje pronounced Kar a warrior and gaves him his warrior name, Jal Karden. Chakotay is freed but Kar tells Chakotay that the next time they meet, he won't hesitate to kill him. (VOY: "Initiations")

Kar was played by actor Aron Eisenberg.
