Mason started his career as sound mixer and editor in the late 1960s and worked with Mike Gray on the documentaries American Revolution 2 (1969), 8 Flags/99¢ (1970), The Murder of Fred Hampton (1971), The Gift: Four Seasons Mosaic of Marc Chagall (1974), and The Rocket Pilots (1981), and the horror film The Final Terror (1983, with Mark Metcalf and special effects by Kenny Myers).

Mason received no credit for his work as writer on the 1985 action film Code of Silence on which Bert Remsen, Mike Genovese, and Molly Hagan also worked. He also wrote with Mike Gray for the television series Starman which featured Michael Cavanaugh as a regular and helped produce the series.
