Joe Taslim (born 23 June 1981; age 35) is an actor, model and martial artist who played a lead role opposite Idris Elba in the 2016 sequel Star Trek Beyond. [1] [2] [3]

Born in Palembang, Indonesia, Taslim studied and trained martial arts from an early age onwards, especially Wushu, Judo, Taekwondo, and Pencak Silat. He then pursued a professional Judo career and won several gold medals, including one at the 1999 South East Asia Judo championships and a silver medal at the 2007 Asean Games. He was a member of the Indonesia Judo national team between 1997 and 2009.

After an injury forced him to stop his career as a professional athlete, Taslim started to work as an actor. Among his first roles are the Indonesian thriller Karma (2008) and the crime drama Rasa (2009). His breakthrough role was the part of Jaka in the 2011 action thriller The Raid, which won several international awards as best film.

Further film work includes the horror film Dead Mine (2012, with stunt director Ken Clark) and Justin Lin's action sequel Furious 6 (2013, with Dwayne Johnson). For his role in the 2013 thriller La tahzan, Taslim was nominated as Best Leading Actor at the Festival Film Indonesia in 2013 and the Best Leading Actor Award at the 2014 Indonesia Movie Awards.

Taslim and his wife Julia married in 2004. The couple has three children.
