Colonel James Bowie (1796 – 1836) was a soldier of the 19th century Texas Militia. In 1836, Bowie, along with Davy Crockett, William B. Travis and 185 other soldiers attempted to defend the Alamo against 2,000 Mexican forces lead by Santa Anna. Bowie died in what was later known as the Battle of the Alamo.

In 1960, the film entitled The Alamo was produced, depicting the fatal battle. The role of Bowie was played by actor Richard Widmark.

When approached by Julian Bashir and Miles O'Brien about "The Alamo", Vic Fontaine recalled Widmark having a part in the film. (DS9: "Badda-Bing, Badda-Bang")

The reference to Widmark is the only indirect reference made to Bowie throughout all of the collective Alamo references made on DS9. The reference, nevertheless, implies that Bowie played a role in the battle.
