Kelman's first professional makeup job came when he was only sixteen years old, working as a makeup effects assistant on the television series Monsters. Afterward, he attended New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, where he majored in film production and from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1995.
After graduating, Kelman moved to Hollywood, California, where he started working in makeup effects lab as an assistant to Academy Award-winning makeup artist, Matthew Mungle. It was during this time that Kelman worked on such films as City of Industry (starring Famke Janssen) and the popular horror thriller I Know What You Did Last Summer.
It was also during his time that Kelman worked as a makeup artist, alongside Mungle, on the TV movie George Wallace, whose cast included Cliff de Young, Mark Rolston, and Clarence Williams III. For their efforts, Kelman and Mungle shared a CableACE Award and were nominated for an Emmy Award (Kelman's first).
Kelman left Mungle's lab in 1997 and began applying character makeup on the hit television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which earned him a second Emmy nomination. He has since received his third nomination – and first win – for his prosthetic work on the hit television series House, which, like Star Trek, features Jennifer Morrison.
He has also done makeup or makeup effects for such films as How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Blow, Planet of the Apes, xXx, Men in Black II, The Ring, Daredevil, Collateral, Click, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry and I Am Legend. His work on 2003's The Cat in the Hat was nominated for Best Special Effects Makeup by the Hollywood Makeup Artist and Hair Stylist Guild Award.
Just prior to Star Trek, Kelman worked on two other highly-anticipated films coming from Paramount Pictures: Iron Man and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Other upcoming films on which he has worked include the comedies You Don't Mess with the Zohan and Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay. The latter stars John Cho, currently playing Hikaru Sulu on the new Star Trek.
