James Whitmore, Jr. (born 24 October 1948; age 75) is a television director and occasional actor who directed the Star Trek: Enterprise episodes "Acquisition" and "Future Tense". He was also featured in the ENT Season 2 DVD special "Shooting Future Tense". He had previously directed Enterprise star Scott Bakula in multiple episodes of Quantum Leap (which also starred Dean Stockwell) and in one episode of CBS' Mr. & Mrs. Smith.

Whitmore is the son of Academy Award-nominated actor James Whitmore (1921–2009). He began his Hollywood career as an actor in the 1970s. Very early in his career, he won a starring role on the NBC series Baa Baa Black Sheep, which also featured John Larroquette and lasted for two seasons from 1976 through 1978. He later starred on the ABC shows The Yeagers in 1980 and Jessie (co-starring William Lucking) during the 1984-85 TV season. In addition, he worked with William Shatner on the 1978 TV movie The Bastards (along with Ian Abercrombie, Kim Cattrall, John Colicos, John de Lancie, Ike Eisenmann, James Gregory, and Alex Henteloff) and a 1984 episode of T. J. Hooker (with James Darren, Richard Herd, and Rosalind Ingledew). He also appeared in three episodes of Quantum Leap.

It was while starring as Sergeant Bernie Terwilliger on NBC's Hunter that Whitmore first began his career behind the camera, directing several episodes of that series. He went on to direct numerous episodes of such popular shows, including 21 Jump Street, Beverly Hills, 90210, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Pretender, 24, Cold Case, and NCIS. He has also directed episodes of shows like Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, The X-Files, Profiler, Roswell, and CSI: NY.

Throughout his career, Whitmore has directed many Star Trek performers in non-Trek roles. Besides Scott Bakula, some of the other regular and recurring Trek performers whom he has directed outside of Enterprise are: Vaughn Armstrong (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Robert Beltran (Models Inc.), Jolene Blalock (JAG), Josh Clark (24), Michelle Forbes (24), Richard Herd (Quantum Leap), Gregory Itzin (Quantum Leap), Penny Johnson (24), Natalia Nogulich (The Pretender), Randy Oglesby (Mister Sterling), Tim Russ (NCIS), Raphael Sbarge (Nowhere Man), Armin Shimerman (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Susanna Thompson (NCIS), and Connor Trinneer (NCIS).
