James "Jim(my)" R. Goldstone (8 June 19315 November 1999; age 68) directed the second pilot for Star Trek: The Original Series, "Where No Man Has Gone Before", as well as the first season episode "What Are Little Girls Made Of?".

In 1964, Goldstone directed "The Inheritors", the classic two-part episode of The Outer Limits which featured Steve Ihnat and Jan Shutan.

In addition to The Outer Limits, Goldstone has directed for such shows as Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea ("The Price of Doom", with Steve Ihnat, Jill Ireland, David Opatoshu and written by Harlan Ellison), Dr. Kildare, and The Man from U.N.C.L.E., as well as such feature films as Winning, Brother John, Red Sky at Morning, and Rollercoaster.

He was a Dartmouth College classmate of Desilu vice president and production head Herbert F. Solow. Solow often sought his advice. Among others, Goldstone recommended Robert Justman as assistant director on the first Star Trek pilot, "The Cage". (Inside Star Trek: The Real Story)

In 1998, Goldstone was interviewed in Solow and Justman's documentary, Inside Star Trek - The Real Story. He said, his headstone will probably read "What's his name? He's the guy who directed the second pilot of Star Trek." One year later, Goldstone succumbed to cancer. [1]
