J. Patrick McNamara (30 October 19422 January 2023; age 80)[1] was an actor who played Captain Taggert in the Star Trek: The Next Generation second season episode "Unnatural Selection".

McNamara was probably best known for his role as Mr. Preston in the science fiction comedy Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989, with Dan Shor, Rod Loomis, Jane Wiedlin, Hal Landon, Jr., Bernie Casey, and Marjean Holden), and its sequel, Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey (1991, with William Sadler, Hal Landon, Jr., Roy Brocksmith, and Frank Welker).

He also played supporting roles in Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977, starring Terri Garr, with Gene Dynarski and Kirk Raymone), and 1941 (1979, with Elisha Cook, Michael McKean, Jerry Hardin, and Dick Miller), Roots: The Next Generation (1979, with Don Keefer), and Gideon's Trumpet (1980, with Richard Lineback, David Clennon, Jerry Hardin, and Seamon Glass).

McNamara guested in episodes of series such as Barnaby Jones (starring Lee Meriwether), Dallas (starring Susan Howard, with Morgan Woodward, Ray Wise, and John Larroquette), The A-Team (starring Dwight Schultz and Melinda Culea, with William Lucking, William Windom, and Peter Brocco), Hill Street Blues (starring James B. Sikking, with Gail Strickland, Saul Rubinek, and Morgan Woodward), Freddie's Nightmares (with Frank Kopyc), Roseanne (with Jeff Corey), and Tales from the Crypt (with Roy Brocksmith and Ian Abercrombie).
