J. Hayes was a Human Military Assault Command Operations officer in the mid-22nd century, and served as the commanding officer of the detachment that had been assigned to Enterprise in 2153. Hayes died in 2154 after rescuing Hoshi Sato from the Xindi-Reptilians.

Biography

Earlier in his career, he undertook survival training on Luna and trained at West Point on Earth. (ENT: "Harbinger", "Hatchery")

Enterprise security chief Lieutenant Malcolm Reed took an instant dislike to Hayes when the MACOs came on board. Hayes reciprocated by challenging Reed's authority at every opportunity.

Hayes ate lunch in the mess hall with N. Kemper, Romero, and Chang every day.

In September, Hayes and his MACOs accompanied Reed on a rescue mission to the trellium mining planet, where the MACOs recovered Captain Jonathan Archer, Commander Tucker, and Kessick. (ENT: "The Xindi")

In October, Hayes accompanied Captain Archer and Lieutenant Reed to the surface of a Xindi-Arboreal colony home to a kemocite facility refining material for the Xindi superweapon. Hayes was in favor of destroying the facility with spatial charges. (ENT: "The Shipment")

En route to Azati Prime and the Xindi weapon, Major Hayes convinced Archer to allow the MACOs to run training drills for the security team, led by Malcolm Reed. Hayes would disagree with Reed over who was going to set up the drills. During the drills, Hayes and Reed became very combative, and ended up engaging in a brawl.

Hayes shot mid-transport.

After Trip Tucker was wounded by a sphere builder alien that the Enterprise had found in a damaged craft, Hayes and Reed would recapture the alien. After this incident, Hayes and Reed would have a mutual respect for each other. (ENT: "Harbinger")

Hayes, along with Archer and Reed, would board a damaged Insectoid vessel, finding the Insectoids dead but a hatchery on the ship. Archer came under the influence of a neurotoxin and imperiled the mission by trying to protect the Insectoid eggs. After Reed managed to destroy another Insectoid vessel, Archer put Hayes in charge of the ship. Hayes was unaware that Archer was under the influence of the Insectoid toxin. T'Pol took over the armory and, along with other crewmembers, seized the bridge from Hayes. (ENT: "Hatchery")

On February 13, 2154, Hayes led a mission aboard a Xindi-Reptilian vessel to rescue Ensign Hoshi Sato from the clutches of the Reptilians. Although Sato was successfully rescued, Hayes was shot and mortally wounded moments before beaming out. On his deathbed, he recommended Corporal J. McKenzie as his replacement. (ENT: "Countdown")

Background information

Hayes was played by actor Steven Culp. In an Template:Brokenlink Culp speculated that Hayes' first name was either "Jeremiah" or "Jay." In the noncanon novel Last Full Measure, Hayes' first name is "Joss." The Star Trek Customizable Card Game gives his name as Jeremiah Hayes.

Culp had previously played Commander Martin Madden in a deleted scene from Star Trek Nemesis.

Hayes technically outranked Reed. An army/marine major is equivalent to a naval lieutenant commander. However, MACOs were explicitly said to be non-Starfleet personnel, so Reed's position as Enterprise's security chief trumped Hayes' rank.
