For additional meanings of "Intrepid", please see Intrepid.

The Intrepid was an United Earth Intrepid-type starship that was in service with Starfleet in the mid-22nd century. The ship's motto was "In Mare In Cælo" ("Into the Sea In the Sky").

History[]

The Intrepid was constructed and placed into service by the year 2153, when it was under the command of Captain Ramirez. (ENT: "The Expanse")

On April 24, 2153, the Intrepid, along with two other starships, aided the returning Enterprise on its way back to Earth while it was under attack by a Klingon Bird-of-Prey. (ENT: "The Expanse")

The Intrepid was one of the vessels gathered at Earth awaiting the return of the Enterprise from the Delphic Expanse in 2154. (ENT: "Storm Front, Part II")

Intrepid disabled

The Intrepid is crippled by the Xindi in an alternate timeline

In an alternate timeline where Earth was destroyed by the Xindi, the Intrepid was one of a few Starfleet vessels to escape destruction. It, along with Enterprise and one other Starfleet vessel, escorted a convoy of the last six thousand Humans to the Ceti Alpha system in 2155-56, and helped patrol the system afterwards. In 2165, the Intrepid suffered heavy damage, including the loss of its port nacelle, in a Xindi attack just before Commander Malcolm Reed would have taken over command of the Intrepid from Ramirez. This timeline was later negated by the eradication of interspatial parasites that had infected Jonathan Archer's brain. (ENT: "Twilight")

Background information[]

Regarding the lack of registry or name on the primary hull, CGI renderer Robert Bonchune stated that "the model is kinda medium-lo quality as it was never built to get close, so it was built/textured accordingly. I also lit her very plainly so you could see the details." [1] For more information on the ship's model, see Intrepid type.

During the writing of "Twilight", the Intrepid replaced Columbia in the episode's script. According to Michael Sussman, the ship was rewritten as the Intrepid "because I knew the Intrepid had been established in an earlier episode, and I wanted to see specifically that model." ("Twilight" audio commentary, ENT Season 3 Blu-ray special features)

In "Twilight", the Intrepid is shown losing its port nacelle. This footage was not originally scripted, though. Originally, a line of dialogue was meant to deliver this information; however, the effect was deemed to carry a greater impact to the audience, so it was included in the final edit of "Twilight", along with the dialogue addressing the plot point.

The Intrepid's mission patch appeared in "The Expanse", on Captain Ramirez's shoulder patch. The motto on the mission patch translates as "In the sea, in the sky." The mission patch was designed by Scenic Art Supervisor Michael Okuda. He based the patch design and motto on those of the US Navy's Essex-class carrier USS Intrepid (CV-11).
