The Inheritors were a group of primitive Humans who were genetically altered by the Sky Spirits. They developed slight ridges above the nose and carried a deep affinity to the land. Over time they spread across the globe and gave rise to the Native American and Amazonian peoples.
Although they were apparently wiped out, their descendants spread across the Federation.
Some small tribes also maintainted both the genetic purity and original culture of the early tribes. (VOY: "Tattoo")
