Changes: IKS Amar

The IKS Amar was a Klingon K't'inga-class battle cruiser that was in service with the Klingon Imperial Fleet in the late 23rd century.

In the mid-2270s, the Amar led a three-ship patrol formation that intercepted the V'ger cloud as it traversed Quad L-14 in Klingon space. The Amar fired three photon torpedoes at the cloud to no effect. After determining their weapons had no effect on the cloud, they attempted to perform evasive maneuvers. The cloud then counterattacked with plasma energy bolts, destroying the two other ships in the patrol before taking aim at the Amar. The crew attempted to disperse the bolt with two additional photon torpedoes, but this proved futile as well and the bolt subsequently destroyed the ship. Before its destruction, the Amar sent a transmission which was intercepted by a Federation sensor drone. (Star Trek: The Motion Picture)

Background information

In Star Trek: The Motion Picture, the Amar was referred to as the "Imperial Klingon Cruiser Amar" in the transmission. In the script, the Amar was referred to as the command cruiser of the three ships. [1]

The set for the Amar's bridge was built on Paramount Stages 12 and 14, its construction costing US$175,000. (The Making of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, p. 95) The footage filmed on the Amar bridge set was shot during The Motion Picture's postproduction period. (The Making of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, p. 193) The entire set was constructed on a platform, requiring all the actors playing Klingons and the film's technicians to walk up many stairs to get to the Klingon bridge. According to Mark Lenard, the lighting equipment, together with the atmospheric smoke used on the set, made it unbearably hot to work on while dressed in his character's thick Klingon costume. This starship shared a name with the Amar system.
