The designation homeworld refers to the planet where a certain species originates from. For example, Earth is the homeworld of the Human species or Romulus is the homeworld of the Romulan species.

In some cases, more than one intelligent species originates from the same planet. In most cases one species destroys the other, although exceptions include Trill and Xindus.

To call a planet a homeworld, it does not have to be the site where a species evolved, but where the cultural and social origin of the certain species lies, just like it is the case with the Romulans, who evolved on the planet Vulcan but moved to their current homeworld Romulus almost 2,000 years ago.
