A holding vessel was a starship which could be used for storage of goods.
In 2368, the USS Tripoli served as a holding vessel for starship components on the outer rim of the surplus depot at Qualor II. One of the components it contained was the navigational deflector of the Vulcan starship T'Pau. (TNG: "Unification I")
