Hawk, Tattoo

A hawk on the Sky Spirits' planet

A hawk was a predatory avian animal native to Earth, among other planets. Hawks were noted for having especially keen eyesight. (TOS: "Requiem for Methuselah"; VOY: "Course: Oblivion")

Chakotay and his father encountered a hawk in the Central Americas rainforest during an expedition to find their kin. (VOY: "Tattoo")

When a survey team of the USS Voyager beamed down to the planet of the Sky Spirits in 2372, Chakotay saw a bird he felt resembled a hawk in the sky. Shortly thereafter, Neelix was attacked by the bird and nearly lost one of his eyeballs. (VOY: "Tattoo")

When Leonardo da Vinci began conceptualizing his flying machine, he initially took the "flapping approach", which mimicked the way a bat or a sparrow flew; his attempt was unsuccessful. It was not until Kathryn Janeway suggested that he should base it on the hawk, that his idea finally took off: "a creature that glides through the air." (VOY: "Scorpion")

Types of hawks Edit

In the revised final draft script of TOS: "Balance of Terror", the pattern on the underside of a Romulan Bird-of-Prey was twice likened to a hawk.
Alan Sims was responsible for hiring the trained hawk that swooped down and attacked Neelix in the episode "Tattoo". "Instead," recalled Sims, "the hawk spotted a crow and went off after it in the opposite direction. It took hours to find him. The delay was a nightmare." (Star Trek 30 Years, p. 46)
