Hanon IV was the fourth planet in the Hanon planetary system. This M-class planet was located near Kazon-Nistrim space in the Delta Quadrant. In 2372, it was at a stage of development equivalent to Earth's Pliocene Age.
Hanon IV hosted a proto-humanoid species, on the verge of civilization. They were divided into tribes of approximately 20 people, with a central leading figure, similar to an elder.
History
In late 2372, the crew of the USS Voyager were marooned there by First Maje Jal Culluh. Left without any technology, they were forced to live there for days to weeks, with little food and water. While there, they made First Contact with the natural inhabitants (the proto-humanoids). After a volcanic eruption, and Commander Chakotay saved one of their kind, their relations improved, initially being one of violence. They were rescued a short time later after Voyager had been retaken, but two crewmembers were killed on the planet. (VOY: "Basics, Part I", "Basics, Part II")
Later, in 2373, Voth scientists Forra Gegen and Veer visited the planet, and excavated the remains of Ensign Hogan. (VOY: "Distant Origin")
Environmental
In the late 24th century, Hanon IV suffered a period of severe seismic and volcanic activity. Earthquakes were not rare, and volcanic eruptions were periodic.
The planet's temperature varied greatly from day to night. During the day, it was often intensely hot, while at night very cold temperatures were common.
Botanical
Water was scarce on the planet, so there was little plant life. But the proto-humanoid inhabitants found some plants, and herbs that could be used for medicinal purposes. Each of the proto-humanoid inhabitants carried a branch/stick with them, so there was probably some kind of tree life on the planet. The planet was also home to a species of edible cucumber-like vegetable growing on vines.
Zoological
Hanon IV was home to several known species of animals. The Hanonian land eel was a large cave-dwelling creature that was capable of eating humanoids. It was also home to small, edible "worm-grubs", that lived under rocks. Large white eggs had been found, implying some kind of bird or reptilian species, though these could possibly be land eel eggs.
