Gregor Johann Mendel was a Catholic friar and famous Earth scientist from the 19th century. He created the basic principles of genetic heredity and suggested the presence of genes.

In 2268, Spock found Lokai's unique appearance to be unexplained by Mendel's theories. (TOS: "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield")

Mendel's actual birth and death years, 1822 and 1884, were noted in the Star Trek Encyclopedia (4th ed., vol. 2, p. 35).
