Hyman graduated with honors from San Francisco State University's film production program in 1994, after which he joined ILM as an assistant effects editor. His first film was the Academy Award-winning Forrest Gump, which was produced by Paramount Pictures. He then worked as an assistant editor on such films as Tim Burton's Mars Attacks! (which featured Paul Winfield) and Steven Spielberg's The Lost World: Jurassic Park.
His credits as a lead effects editor have included Starship Troopers (starring Clancy Brown and Dina Meyer), Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and the M. Night Shyamalan films Signs and The Happening (featuring Alan Ruck). He also did uncredited work on Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith and the Pirates of the Caribbean sequels, Dead Man's Chest and At World's End.
