Listed among Kirk's commendations in 2259

The Grankite Order of Tactics was a Starfleet commendation awarded to officers who demonstrated exceptional tactical acumen.

Recipients[]

James T. Kirk received this award in the mid-23rd century, and later attained the class of excellence by 2259. (SNW: "A Quality of Mercy") It was among Captain Kirk's many commendations cited by the computer during his court martial in 2267. (TOS: "Court Martial")

Jean-Luc Picard received this award, Class of Excellence, for his development of the Picard Maneuver aboard the USS Stargazer on stardate 40218.3. This award was stored in Picard's section of the quantum archive at the Starfleet Archive Museum. (PIC: "Remembrance")

The award was one of the props displayed at Comic Con's exhibit Jean-Luc Picard: The First Duty in the summer of 2019. [1]

As a commander, Liam Shaw was awarded the Grankite Order of Tactics, Class of Excellence, "in recognition of outstanding maneuvers in battle." He later displayed the trophy in the conference room as captain of the USS Titan-A. (PIC: "The Next Generation", et al.)

Shaw's awards, though illegible on screen, were visible in a behind the scenes VR tour. [2]

Grankite Order of Tactics (Class of Excellence) in Riker's service record

In 2367, while exploring a cavern on Alpha Onias III, Commander William T. Riker was rendered unconscious by gases. While unconscious, neural scanners scanned Riker's brain. The scanners used elements of Riker's reality and constructed a holodeck simulation with those elements interspersed throughout, so that it felt real to him. What Riker wanted, the scanners made possible.

In one of these simulations, on stardate 46179, Commander Riker was awarded the Grankite Order of Tactics (Class of Excellence) for his role in the Zavolta Planetary Geosciences Survey Expedition. In 2383, this was mentioned in Riker's service record that was on display in his quarters on the Enterprise-D. (TNG: "Future Imperfect", okudagram)

Background information[]

In the final draft script of "Court Martial", the name of this award was rendered "Grankite order of tactics", though the revised final draft of the script changed this to "Grankite order of tactic", which is also how the name is pronounced (by computer voice) in the episode itself. However, both the service record from "Future Imperfect" and the Picard family album pluralize the final word in the name.

Reference to the Grankite Order of Tactics was added to Riker's simulated service record in the remastered version of "Future Imperfect".

A Grankite Order of Tactics awarded to Jean-Luc Picard

A Grankite Order of Tactics, Class of Excellence, document was created for the Picard family album in Star Trek Generations; however, the certificate was not seen in the film. It described being in "recognition of his development of the Picard Maneuver during the 'Battle of Maxia' while in command of the USS Stargazer." (Star Trek: The Magazine Volume 3, Issue 3, p. 69)

A different document, maintaining the same film-era delta over olive branches with three stars on each side, was created for Star Trek: Picard. [3]
