A geologist or exogeologist was an individual who conducted research and study in the field of planetary geology.

In 2152, the Enterprise NX-01 was dispatched to Xantoras to extract a team of three spelunking Denobulan geologists. While navigating the caverns and choosing which way to go, Malcolm Reed noticed a cluster of crystals and decided "If I was a geologist, that's the way I'd go." Later, when the landing party located the Denobulans, they were told that there were plenty of other caverns they could explore, before Trip Tucker explained "We're not geologists," before Reed added that they were there to rescue them. (ENT: "The Breach")

In 2254, when the USS Enterprise visited Talos IV in response to a distress call, the ship's geologist Fisher, submitted a geological lab report upon entering orbit. (TOS: "The Cage", "The Menagerie, Part I")

During the M-5 drill aboard the USS Enterprise in 2267, Captain James T. Kirk selected Geologist Rawlins for a proposed general survey party to Alpha Carinae II, however the M-5 computer selected Carstairs. Kirk argued that he felt Carstairs wasn't right for the job because he was an ensign on his first tour of duty, and that Rawlins was his chief geologist. M-5, however, chose Geologist Carstairs due to the fact that he had served on merchant marine freighters in the region and that he had once visited planet on a geology survey for mining company. (TOS: "The Ultimate Computer")

In 2268, speaking to Senior Geologist D'Amato about joining a survey party, Captain Kirk described the Kalandan outpost planet as a geologist's dream. D'Amato agreed, stating that an "opportunity to explore so young a planet is an incredible bit of luck." Kirk bolstered the offer by stating that following his analysis, "you'll have a report to startle the Fifth Interstellar Geophysical Conference." (TOS: "That Which Survives")

Sometime before 2369, Nella Daren lead a team of geologists in a study of the plasma geyser on Melnos IV. (TNG: "Lessons")

In 2370, the USS Enterprise-D visited Atrea IV at the request of the Atrean government to assist in averting a natural disaster. Two geologists from the planet, Juliana and Pran Tainer came aboard the Enterprise-D to discuss the situation of the solidification of the planet's molten core. (TNG: "Inheritance")

In his holographic program Julian Bashir, Secret Agent, Julian Bashir – while posing as Patrick Merriweather – claimed he was a geologist when he tried to meet Hippocrates Noah. (DS9: "Our Man Bashir")

In 2373, Sklar, a Nezu exogeologist, who was having difficulties while traveling aboard an orbital tether, stated that due to his profession he preferred "working on the ground." (VOY: "Rise")
