A genetic analysis was a medical scan to identify or verify a lifeform.

By using a few undamaged cells, Doctor Phlox was able to perform a genetic analysis on the unidentified individual found in a vessel. The result found no match in the Starfleet database but he was no ordinary Human. (ENT: "Future Tense")
