A Geiger counter was a device used to indicate the presence and strength of radiation.
In 2366, while stranded on Galorndon Core and searching for a probe which was emitting neutrinos, Geordi La Forge likened the merging of a tricorder and his VISOR to a Geiger counter. (TNG: "The Enemy")
