Ganymede was the largest moon of Jupiter, the fifth planet of the Sol system. It had a diameter of 3,627 miles (5,837 kilometers). It was one of the Galilean moons.

In the 23rd century, this moon was inhabited. In 2268, Montgomery Scott of the Federation starship USS Enterprise mentioned a mysterious "green drink" he found on Ganymede, and later shared with the Kelvan Tomar. (TOS: "By Any Other Name"; PIC: "Two of One")

In early 2366, a painting of Ganymede's surface was displayed on a wall in the observation lounge of the USS Enterprise-D. (TNG: "The Ensigns of Command")
