The Gamelan system was a planetary system. A planet in this system, Gamelan V, was inhabited by a native humanoid species. Within this system, there was the Meltasion asteroid belt.
On Stardate 44307.3, an unmanned garbage scow filled with highly radioactive waste material drifted into orbit of Gamelan V, threatening the planet's population.
The starship USS Enterprise-D responded to the planet's distress call, pulling the vessel out of orbit and tractoring it into the Gamelan sun where it would meet its harmless destruction. (TNG: "Final Mission")
