The Gagarin Radiation Belt was an area of space that surrounded the Loracus system. It was considered distant from Altamid. (ENT: "Strange New World"; Star Trek Beyond)
At one time, the radiation belt made travel to the system all but impossible until the system's primary star became relatively stable sometime prior to 2151. (ENT: "Strange New World")
In 2164, the Federation starship USS Franklin went missing in the belt. It was later theorized in an alternate reality 2263 by Montgomery Scott that the ship experienced a wormhole displacement to account for its remote distance, for the 22nd century, from Earth after the ship was discovered on the planet Altamid. (Star Trek Beyond)
The Gagarin Radiation Belt was possibly named after or perhaps a reference to Yuri Gagarin, the first human being ever to venture into space by completing a full orbit of Earth in 1961.
