(written from a Production point of view)

Frank Kelly Freas (27 August 19222 January 2005; age 82) was a pre-production illustrator for the aborted series Star Trek: Phase II. He also contributed an illustration to DC Comics' series of Star Trek Annuals, the cover painting to 1992's TOS volume 2 Annual #3, "Homeworld".

Freas was a legendary science fiction and fantasy artist, creating illustrations and cover paintings for various books and publications over his career, spanning more than 50 years. His most famous work is probably the cover for the October 1953 issue of Astounding Science Fiction, which has also been used for the cover of the 1977 Queen album, News of the World.

Freas was commissioned by the first national Star Trek convention to create paintings for the event's program book; those seven paintings (of Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Montgomery Scott, Sulu, Uhura, and Chekov) have since been hung in the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum.
