When Leonard McCoy questioned Spock's motives for leaving planet Gamma II to search for the missing James T. Kirk, Pavel Chekov and Nyota Uhura, he accused Spock of "[running] off on some "wild goose chase" halfway across the galaxy..."; though Spock corrected McCoy's choice of words, stating, "Doctor, I am chasing the Captain, Lieutenant Uhura, and Ensign Chekov, not some wild aquatic fowl." When the Rakhari criminal Croden explained his crime of speaking out against his repressive government on Rakhar to Odo in 2369, he explained that the government retaliated by killing his wives. Croden, who claimed to have, at the time, "no sophisticated weapon" only "a short, slaughter knife" that he otherwise used for "cutting the necks of fowl we would prepare for supper." He then described his surprise when he discovered that "that the necks of the security officers were no more difficult to cut than the birds. Even the sound they made as the blade crossed their gullets were similar." (DS9: "Vortex")

Janos Prohaska's scene as the humanoid bird for TOS: "The Cage" was to have been far more extended, but Prohaska's performance proved to be too weird for Director Robert Butler, who recalled. "I remember there was some chicken – some killer fowl – being locked in some cell somewhere, and I'm talking to this stuntman – it's crazy, me talking to this Janos Prohaska, [who was] Hungarian or something...[saying], "Janos, okay that's good, baby, now try this."
