When Kirk leaves the Enterprise in Star Trek to go to Nero's ship with Spock, he seemingly leaves Sulu in charge (giving him orders to attack if he thinks he has the advantage). In Into Darkness, he gives Sulu the bridge when he, Spock and Uhura go to Kronos. In the first instance, Scotty is manning the transporter station, and in the second he isn't a member of the crew at that point.
