In "Where No Man has Gone Before", Gary Mitchell quotes from a poem called "Nightingale Woman". It the episode notes it says that Gene Roddenberry wrote that poem himself while he was a pilot, dedicating it to his airplane. However I can't help but wonder if it is also a reference to the story of Philomela in Ovid's Metamorphoses. That would seem to fit the show's violent ending. Is there a connection?
Also, is the full version of the poem available somewhere?
