A game of football

For the sport commonly known as "football" globally, please see Soccer.

Football was a competitive team sport played on Earth. The game was played on the high school, collegiate, and professional level. It was also the name of the actual type of ball used in the sport.

A man wearing a hat promoting the Atlanta Falcons visited the Cetacean Institute in 1986. (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home)

In December of 2000, a football game was being shown on a television at a bar in Portage Creek at which Shannon O'Donnel and Henry Janeway found themselves. One team participating in that game was Baylor. (VOY: "11:59")

In 2024, Biddle "B.C." Coleridge complimented Benjamin Sisko (who had assumed the identity of Gabriel Bell) on his tackle and asked whether he had ever played football, to which Sisko replied, "Baseball, actually." (DS9: "Past Tense, Part II")

Aboard the ECS Fortunate in 2151, Captain Jackson Keene and his first officer, Matthew Ryan, repeatedly passed a football back and forth to each other with the gravity plating turned off between them, allowing the ball to float freely from one end to the other. Keene quipped that Ryan would not be able to catch the ball if the grav-plating was set at Earth sea level. Ryan retorted that Keene would not be able to toss the ball ten meters on Earth. (ENT: "Fortunate Son")

In the first draft script of "Fortunate Son", this version of football was called "Ship Toss". The same script also established that it involved a specialized ball which was "a heat seeker fixed at Human body temperature" and featured controls that needed to be set to the numbers of players in each game.
At one point in "Fortunate Son"'s first draft script, Ensign Travis Mayweather, in a corridor aboard Enterprise, offered Ryan a game of Ship Toss in a corridor aboard Enterprise NX-01, but Ryan was too frustrated to play, having just had an argument with Captain Archer. In the final scene of the script, however, Mayweather began setting up a game of Ship Toss with Reed and Tucker, in Enterprise's armory.

A Vulcan cultural observer once witnessed a football game, and incorrectly reported that the aim of the game was for the players to attempt to "kill the quarterback." Kov once read this report, and asked Commander Tucker about the details, which he straightened out. (ENT: "Fusion")

In 2375, Kasidy Yates asked a guard in Vic's Las Vegas Lounge if he had been the captain of the football team at a high school in Asheville, North Carolina. The guard admitted that he had "played a little football" in high school. (DS9: "Badda-Bing, Badda-Bang")

Professional baseball, a rival Earth sport, declined after 2042, when the final World Series was played. However, football seems to have outlasted it, at least through the 2150s.
The Detroit Lions, the Chicago Bears, and the New York Jets are football teams that were referenced in the final draft script of ENT: "Carpenter Street".
TOS guest star Fred Williamson played professional football for three teams from 1960-67.
