Fleet is a word often used to describe a group of ships working or traveling together. Though they are often used in war, fleets can be used for peace. Throughout history, fleets have been prevalent on planets as well as in space.
Fleets on planets
In the history of Earth, fleets have been used for many purposes, such as war. Since these conflicts took place on a planet, they involved naval ships as opposed to starships. (TNG: "The Best of Both Worlds")
As of 2375, the Federation still maintained some sort of navy, called the Federation Naval Patrol. (VOY: "Thirty Days")
Fleets in space
A star fleet or space fleet is a fleet of starships or other spacecraft. Starfleet was organized into several fleets, task forces, assault fleets, wings, and units. A notable star fleet was the Star Fleet Battle Group Omega. (Star Trek Nemesis)
A joint fleet of 128 starships led by the Enterprise NX-01 under Jonathan Archer composed of Vulcan, Andorian, Tellarite and Human vessels were used to create a massive sensor net to track down and neutralize a Romulan drone ship that was destabilizing the region. (ENT: "The Aenar")
In Melakon's 2268 Final Decision speech, he revealed that a space fleet was on its way toward Zeon, consisting of both manned and unmanned weapons. (TOS: "Patterns of Force")
The Jem'Hadar, Cardassians, and Breen utilized large fleets during the Dominion War. (DS9: "What You Leave Behind")
In 2368, Geordi La Forge derived a tachyon detection grid for the purpose of detecting cloaked Romulan ships during the Klingon Civil War. Multiple Federation starships were required to create the grid. (TNG: "Redemption II")
