Fire ants were a highly successful Earth insect that tended to inhabit countries with warmer climates. These ants could be found throughout the southern regions of North America, much of South America, and Australia. They tended to be red in color and had a sting which was extremely painful to Humans.
Ensign Harry Kim described the Akritirian clamp neural device as being covered with fire ants after he and Lieutenant Tom Paris were fitted with them. (VOY: "The Chute")
