An exam or test was an oral, physical, or written means to measure someone's abilities.

In the 24th century, an oral examination was the final step in the Starfleet Academy entrance exam. In 2366, Wesley Crusher hoped to do as well on the oral portion as the written examination. Geordi La Forge assured him he would. As Crusher later missed out on this test, Admiral Hahn expressed his regrets, which Jean-Luc Picard passed on to Crusher. (TNG: "Ménage à Troi")

The Starfleet Medical also had an oral component in its final exams. Julian Bashir recalled mistaking a preganglionic fiber for a postganglionic nerve in the oral portion of the exam, thus missing out on being his graduating class's valedictorian, but earning the title of salutatorian instead. (DS9: "Q-Less")

In 2368, Elizabeth Lense became valedictorian of her graduating class when she made the highest mark in her final exam. (DS9: "Explorers")

In 2369, Doctor Julian Bashir tried to impress a Bajoran woman at the Replimat on Deep Space 9. He told her during their date about his final exam and how he mistook a preganglionic fiber for a postganglionic nerve. The Bajoran woman seemed fascinated by his stories and when Bashir had to leave she told him that there would be another time for them. (DS9: "Q-Less")

The night blessing of the Yash-El was "Dream not of today". At Starfleet Academy, Jean-Luc Picard missed this question in his final archaeology exam. (TNG: "The Chase")
