Tram

A tram on a street in San Francisco

A tram was typically a land vehicle designed for public transportation. They were common in San Francisco.

By the 23rd century, air trams, trams capable of atmospheric flight, were in common use, although the traditional street variety were also still in use, including cable cars. (Star Trek Into Darkness)

In the year 2259 of the alternate reality created by Nero's temporal incursion, there was a tram near Khan when he was getting chased by Spock in San Francisco. (Star Trek Into Darkness)

By the 2270s, San Francisco had their own air tram stations. Starfleet personnel were transported to Starfleet Headquarters through this method of transportation. Rear Admiral James T. Kirk, for example, once rode aboard air tram 3. (Star Trek: The Motion Picture; DS9: "Homefront", "Paradise Lost"; VOY: "Non Sequitur")

The tram system seen in DS9 was a tribute to Earth II, a pilot for a failed series created by Gene Roddenberry. (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion (p. 302))
