The painting was originally created by Rick Sternbach for a Known Space story collection, though the final version added labels to some stars. It depicts the Milky Way Galaxy. In an "About the Cover" note at the end of that book, Berman claims that while it may not be clearly visible in reproductions, the original painting contains "all fourteen black holes, two puppeteer-built General Products spacecraft hulls, egg-shaped Jinx, and... there. The Ringworld, too, of course."
