Primary phaser of a Constitution-class starship, as viewed in a technical journal by Montgomery Scott. (TOS: "The Trouble with Tribbles")

This is a detail closeup of the artwork seen onscreen on Scotty's viewer, as researched by Greg Jein in his "The Case of Jonathan Doe Starship" article, published in the April 1973 issue 27 of the T-Negative fanzine. The graphic was actually not seen in its entirety in the episode as aired, but the complete version was seen in a shot that was trimmed from the scene. The trimmed clipping was later sold at Star Trek conventions by Lincoln Enterprises of former Exectutive Producer Gene Roddenberry, where it was acquired by Jein, enabling him to do his analysis.
The graphic itself was created by Art Director Matt Jefferies, who used his own extensive aviation library as his source of inspiration. Depicted were two varieties of hydraulic fluid reservoirs, used by the US Air Force at the time. [1]
