A field officer is any commissioned officer that is not a commanding officer.

In Starfleet, officers with the military rank of lieutenant commander and lower were considered field officers. In 2373, Lt. Commander Jadzia Dax compared herself, a "simple field officer," to Captain Benjamin Sisko and the "brass hats" in Starfleet Command during her complaint about Starfleet's recent inaction in the Dominion War.
